2. HISTORY OF THE FACULTY

The Faculty of Agriculture at Ankara University is a higher education institution that has the scientific experience gained from the last 100 years of education in Turkey. It aims to educate and train well qualified agricultural engineers, scientists and administrative staff to generate and disseminate technologies required for every aspects of the country's dynamic agricultural sector.

The Faculty was founded in 1933 in Ankara. However, its longer experience extends from that of the Halkalı High School of Agriculture which functioned in İstanbul from the last decade of 19th century. A few years after the foundation of the Turkish Republic 1923, this school was transferred to Ankara and was the cornerstone in the establishment of the Agricultural Faculty.

Until 1955, this faculty was the only higher educational institution in Turkey which included teaching in agricultural sciences. From this time it fostered the development of other institutions giving rise to the most of all the other agricultural faculties presently spread throughout Turkey.

Modifications and adjustments to the educational system of the faculty occur periodically in order to ensure it keeps itself up to date to meet the rapidly changing demands of the vital agricultural sector of the Turkish economy.

3. MISSION AND OPPORTUNITIES

Agriculture is the world's largest and most important industry. Engineering is the input that permits this industry to produce our most basic needs without requiring the efforts of the whole population. In Turkey, agriculture accounts for a significant portion of the country's economy. Agricultural engineers serve an immense industry. Agricultural engineers are involved in the design, development, manufacture, and application of products, systems, and knowledge for this huge industry. Their work affects not only the inputs at the farm level but the supporting and related industries that supply, transport, process, and distribute products. The missions of the Ankara University Agricultural Faculty are:
-To educate students to become creative, inquisitive, industrious in agricultural engineering, donated with design, production, and selection, effective and safe operation of agricultural.
-To perform research and development activities that will contribute science and national technology;
-To lead and to pioneer in related fields.
-To inform farmers and make extension to public.
Agricultural Faculty offers educational programs designed to prepare students for professional career by developing a sound base in fundamental agricultural engineering. The undergraduate and graduate programs are intended to develop individual initiative, creativity, talent, and the capability to develop, follow and adopt new technologies in the field of agriculture.
The lectures are supplemented by tutorials, use of computers, and experimental work in various laboratories. Departments in Agricultural Faculty are also heavily involved in basic and applied research and consultancy.

4. PHYSICAL FACILITIES

A wide range of modern facilities for teaching and research are available in the Faculty of Agriculture. Each Department has several laboratories equipped with advanced appliances. There is a computer and data processing centre in the Faculty. Greenhouses, studios, workshops, experimental fields for vegetable, fruit, wine and field crops and in-door fish culture units are distributed throughout main campus area of the Faculty. More details about these facilities are given in the description of individual departments.

There is a 420 ha faculty research farm which came into service in 1983. This farm provides excellent opportunities for both research activities and practical training. This farm also serves to demonstrate modern techniques and technologies to nearby rural communities. Since it is located 40 km away from Ankara, a student hostel with a capacity of 100 students and additional accommodation facilities for academic staff is available on site. There are three other experimental stations located at the different areas, Ayaş, Kalecik (Ankara) and Çifteler (Eskişehir). In Çifteler, the Faculty has an experimental station for aquaculture occupying on 112 da areas with many ponds.
